Expanding mountain forest promotes climate warming

Environment[1] Environment[1]Climate Change [2]Forest [3]Mountain [4]Norway [5]Forskning.no [6] Birch forest is currently expanding in mountain regions because of climate warming and reduced grazing pressure. A recent study shows that increased mountain forest promotes climate warming. Tourists and locals have noticed that forests are creeping up hillsides in mountain regions in Norway. Beautiful views are lost behind trees, and previously open meadows are now invaded by birch and bushes. Some may have considered that even though these changes in the landscape may not be positive, at least it is a comfort that the increasing carbon stock in the vegetation lowers the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and thereby counteracts climate warming. "Unfortunately, that is not true," says Heleen de Wit, scientist at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA). –Expanding mountain forest will actually promote climate warming. This conclusion builds on a recent study where Norwegian scientists have assessed climate change feedbacks of higher forest limits. Heleen de Wit led the project which was a cooperation between Cicero, Skog og Landskap, NINA og NIVA.

The impact of climate change on ecosystem carbon dynamics at the Scandinavian mountain birch forest-tundra heath ecotone.
Changes in temperature and moisture resulting from climate change are likely to strongly modify the ecosystem carbon sequestration capacity in high-latitude areas, both through vegetation shifts and via direct warming effects on photosynthesis and decomposition. This paper offers a synthesis of research addressing the potential impacts of climate warming on soil processes and carbon fluxes at t...
متن کاملModeling the Influence of Topographic Barriers on Treeline Advance at the Forest-tundra Ecotone in Northwestern Alaska
The response of terrestrial ecosystems to climate warming has important implications to potential feedbacks to climate. The interactions between topography, climate, and disturbance could alter recruitment patterns to reduce or offset current predicted positive feedbacks to warming at high latitudes. In northern Alaska the Brooks Range poses a complex environmental and ecological barrier to spe...
متن کاملWarming-Induced Decline of Picea crassifolia Growth in the Qilian Mountains in Recent Decades
Warming-induced drought has widely affected forest dynamics in most places of the northern hemisphere. In this study, we assessed how climate warming has affected Picea crassifolia (Qinghai spruce) forests using tree growth-climate relationships and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) along the Qilian Mountains, northeastern Tibet Plateau (the main range of Picea crassifolia). Bas...

A headwater basin in the Sumava Mountains (Czech Republic), the upper Vydra basin, has undergone forest disturbance as a result of repeated windstorms, a bark beetle outbreak, and forest management. This study analyzed the long-term (1961–2010) hydro-climatic changes by using a combination of statistical analyses, including Mann-Kendall tests, CUSUM analysis, Buishand’s and Petitt’s homogeneity...
متن کاملVariations of Soil Microbial Community Structures Beneath Broadleaved Forest Trees in Temperate and Subtropical Climate Zones
Global warming has shifted climate zones poleward or upward. However, understanding the responses and mechanism of microbial community structure and functions relevant to natural climate zone succession is challenged by the high complexity of microbial communities. Here, we examined soil microbial community in three broadleaved forests located in the Wulu Mountain (WLM, temperate climate), Funi...
